The interest in mineral/medicinal water was booming at the beginning of the 20th century. It was even sold at the chemist.
Dr August Pi i Gibert and his forward-looking ideas and entrepreneurial character came from Barcelona with the aim of learning more about the sources of sparkling water in the area of Pasteral and Colomer.
He focused his interest in Font Picant del Colomer and acquired the land in Amer to set up a factory and market the water of this area.

The production was initially carried out in a small building set right next to the Amer riverbed.
Rita Masachs Comas, one of the very first factory workers, bottled the water by hand. She was joined later by Joaquima Faig Juanola, “la Quima” and Narciso Babot Puig “Ciso”.
In 1926, after Dr Pi i Gibert’s passing, the Junquera family took over the exploitation for two years until it reached the hands of a team of French doctors who changed the name from “Agua de Amer” to “Amer-Palatín”.

In 1926, after Dr Pi i Gibert’s passing, the Junquera family took over the exploitation for two years until it reached the hands of a team of French doctors who changed the name from “Agua de Amer” to “Amer-Palatín”.
The French doctors fulfilled part of Dr Pi i Gibert’s dream and built a spa hotel called “Amer-Palatín” in the surrounding areas of the Amer spring, offering summer accommodation to first-rate guests.
This spa offered accommodation, restaurant and a broad range of leisure activities to its guests.
The spa was easy to access, so much so that it became a major summer resort, from where they marketed their own bottled water called “Amer-Palatín”.

The factory and the hotel operation were brought to a standstill for four years until the unsteadiness of the Spanish Civil War died down.
Manel Fábregas brought the Hotel-Restaurant Amer-Palatín back to life after the war.The Hotel-Spa regained its status as a benchmark summer resort for the elite classes of Barcelona.
Two types of water were produced around 1955: l’Amer Palatín and FONTER. FONTER gained ground while the Amer-Palatín table water ended up disappearing.
At this time, all operations at the water bottling plant, including cleaning, filling, capping, labelling and fitting, were carried out by hand.

At this time, all the production was mechanised, and it increased the workforce 80 to 100 workers, producing and selling between 20 and 25 million litres of water a year.
In 1982, the business was transferred to the French company BSN, who later joined up with what we now know as Danone, the group to which FONTER belongs these days.

Since Fonter emerged as a firm commitment towards sparkling water, it has not ceased to transmit expertise in fine Mediterranean bubbles over time.
Nowadays, Fonter continues growing with the launch of Fonter Lemon & Lime, a refreshing drink based on the combination of sparkling water and fruit juice.
